Prevention of the car in winter

Car Prevention in Winter 1 | The power of technology for your car

In the period from November to April, it is time for exciting holidays, winter wonders and rest. But at this time, there may also be a need for frequent or long-distance car trips. Statistically, winter is the busiest time of year for you and your car, and since cars are our specialty, we wanted to share our best tips for driving in snowy weather.

What should be remembered and how to reduce the risk of frost?

In winter, the most important thing is to be sure that the car is ready for tests in cold, snow and ice.

The most important elements that need to be kept under control are the following:

If you have a manual transmission, check for damage, your brake pads should be in top condition, and check that the car is easy to drive and free of artifacts. Also, don't forget that in winter it is necessary to "change" the car to winter tires.

It is best if before each trip you analyze all the functions of the car in the parking lot, than to experience malfunctions on the road when stopping is impossible.

Driving in winter

  • 1. Make sure that the fuel system is working, and also that there is a means for washing the windshield.
  • 2. Start the car and turn on the heating to melt or soften the ice on the front and rear windshields.
  • 3. After your car has warmed up, clean your mirrors, headlights, taillights, and license plate.
  • 4. De-ice your windshield and wipe off as much as you can before getting back in your car and using the wiper blades. Remember that hot water is not an option for your glass, as it can damage it and even crack it.
  • 5. Be sure to warm up the car and wipe the windshield as much as possible before activating the windshield wipers. It may seem faster and easier to turn on the wipers, but this can irreparably damage the parts of the wiper blades.
  • 6. Once your windshields are frozen, try to clear the snow and ice around your wheels and under the front and rear bumpers to make your departure as smooth as possible.
  • 7. Before starting, make sure that your car is warmed up, there are no danger signals and the car engine "sounds" properly.
  • 8. Drive only with your headlights on.
  • 9. Do not move too fast to be able to stop in an emergency.
  • 10. Try not to "hold on to the tail", the car is unpredictable in winter, so it is better to keep at a distance.
  • 11. Be careful in traffic jams and take your time.
  • 12. If the car slides, do not panic, but act clearly according to the situation and traffic rules.
  • 13. Try to see the road as far as possible in case of special situations.
  • 14. Carry out car diagnostics as often as possible.
  • 15. In case of emergencies, you should always have a working cell phone and a first aid kit.

Checklist for winter driving

Tire pressure

Tire pressure is critical to maintaining safe driving, which is even more important in winter conditions. Avoid sliding on icy roads by checking your tire pressure often. From time to time, make sure that the tire pressure meets the standards for your car model.

Battery check

During the onset of cold weather, the battery should be checked regularly. When the temperature drops, the battery must work harder due to increased use of the heater, defrosters and wiper blades. Battery failure is the leading cause of car breakdowns in the winter, so do everything you can to keep it in good condition and working. If you do need a new battery, especially in the winter, you should replace it as soon as possible.

Wiper blades

Replace the wiper blades if you haven't already. You're supposed to change them at least once a year, and having a new set of wiper blades will do you a lot of good during the cold season.

Windshield wiper fluid

Impaired visibility due to ice on the glass is one of the most dangerous side effects of winter driving. Consider purchasing a special cleaning fluid. The formulas for these fluids are specially designed to avoid freezing on the windshield.

Filters

Replace dirty filters such as air, fuel and PCV. In the winter season, any malfunction in these elements is felt more strongly.

Service

Be especially careful with your car during the winter period. In the case of the slightest changes in the operation of the engine or other systems, you should conduct an inspection and keep the car in good condition. Everything from your transmission to your battery and from your brakes to your exhaust should be checked at least once a season to make sure your car is in top condition to fight the snowdrifts.

Car cover

Keeping your car warm can do a lot for its health. If possible, keep your car in a garage or invest in a car cover. This will help prevent fluid, oil, gasoline, and coolant from freezing, as well as protect the battery and starter motor from damage.

Antifreeze

Any car care professional will tell you to always keep your coolant or antifreeze level up. This should be part of a regular car check, but make sure you always have these fluids on hand during the winter. Keeping extra antifreeze or coolant in your car is a great way to prepare for an emergency.

Light

During the winter months, the days are much shorter, which means more driving in the dark. Make sure all exterior lights are working. If they are off, replace the lamp. The same if they are damaged or appear yellow. Also, always clear snow or ice from the headlights before driving.

Kit for Extreme Situations

Always be prepared for an emergency, regardless of the time of year. Make sure you have an emergency kit that includes a flashlight, blanket, phone battery, radio, ice scraper, first aid kit and jumper cables. If you are missing something from the list, try to purchase. It's not a huge expense, but it can save a life if needed.
