Intake system (intake system) internal combustion engine — a set of devices intended for the preparation and introduction of a fresh charge of air or fuel-air mixture to cylinders. In engines with external mixture formation, the intake system takes over the functions of mixture formation. The concept of "intake system" appeared with the development of the design of internal combustion engines, especially with the appearance of direct fuel injection systems. The equipment for supplying the engine with air ceased to be just an air duct, but turned into a separate system.

The intake system contains air intake, air cleaning device (air filter), air flow sensor, throttle valve, intake manifold etc. In engines with inflating also belong to the intake system compressors, intermediate coolers air as well gas turbines turbo compressors.

In its work, the intake system interacts with many systems of the engine and the car as a whole, including with injection system, exhaust gas recirculation system, gasoline vapor capture system, vacuum brake booster, etc. The interaction of the listed and a number of other systems is ensured by the corresponding ones electronic control units (English electronic control unit, ECU) and first of all, engine control unit (English engine control module, ECM).
