The API GL-5 classification applies to lubricants intended for gears, especially hypoid gears, in axles operating under various combinations of high speed / shock load and low speed / high torque.
The performance characteristics for API GL-5 are defined in the most recent version of the standard ASTM D7450. Friction coefficient requirements for axles equipped with limited slip differentials (limited friction, LS) are usually determined by the axle manufacturer.
