Which oil to pour into a diesel engine: secrets and features?

Diesel engines have long become quite popular. Compared with their gasoline counterparts, they run a bit longer, are cheaper to maintain, and fuel prices are significantly lower. However, a diesel engine is rather temperamental, so it is important to know certain specifics to avoid a wrong choice. So which oil is best to pour into a diesel engine?

Principle of operation of a diesel engine

The proper operation of diesel vehicles directly depends on the chosen oil. To understand which oil to use for the correct functioning of a diesel unit, one needs to know the basics and principles of its operation, as well as understand the oil consumption characteristics in a diesel engine. In a diesel engine, incomplete fuel combustion often occurs, and the high oil pressure in the combustion chamber forces gases into the crankcase, promoting rapid oxidation, causing the lubricant to age quickly and change its color. Another issue is a high sulfur content, for example in domestic diesel fuel. Diesel units may be equipped with a turbocharger, in which case the choice of oil brand becomes even more complicated, as such an engine is even more demanding. As is known, modern manufacturers add special additives to enhance its properties. It is important that diesel engine oil contains cleaning and detergent additives to reduce soot levels and prevent deposits from accumulating in the cylinders and on valve train components. To combat soot, alkaline and anti‑oxidant additives are added. However, besides the content and type of additives, there are many other factors to consider when selecting engine oil.

Characteristics of diesel engine oils

Usually the vehicle manufacturer specifies which exact engine oil should be used for each specific car model. A specialist in such products can help select the appropriate fluid. Many car owners dealing with diesel try to use the best lubricants, yet few truly understand them and know which oil to pour into the diesel engine of a specific model, taking into account the vehicle's year of manufacture and mileage. First of all, one must understand that there are several main types of oils. To grasp them, it is worthwhile to study the specifics of each in detail.

Classification according to the SAE standard

First of all, motor oil is classified according to the international SAE standard. The label always shows the designation made according to this standard – 5W-40, 10W-40, 15W40 and so on. The letter W indicates low‑temperature grade, the other numbers indicate viscosity. Accordingly, the smaller the number, the more fluid the liquid in the can. These figures determine the flow rate of oil through the lubrication system channels, how quickly it will be delivered to the friction parts and the degree of rotational resistance.   Оils for diesel engines are most often used with the numbers 5W, 10W and 15W. They are designed to operate at ambient temperatures of -25, -20 and -15°C respectively, and are the most relevant. The second numeric figure, for example 40 in the 5W-40 designation, indicates high‑temperature viscosity, i.e., after the engine reaches operating temperature. It is important to note that these figures do not tell vehicle owners anything about the oil’s origin. The same designation can be used for both mineral and synthetic oils. Moreover, quality should not be judged solely by these numbers. Each product is intended for specific applications, and only the manufacturing technology influences material quality.

Classification by API standard

  When discussing classification according to API standards, certain subcategories should be highlighted: CC are used in naturally aspirated diesel engines, or in engines with low boost; CD is applied to high‑boost engines, to fuel with high sulfur content, and for operation under severe conditions; CE – for turbocharged diesel engines produced after 1983; CF-4 – for four‑stroke engines produced after 1990; CG-4 is used for modern models and has high toxicity level requirements; CD-11, CF-2 are used for two‑stroke diesels. SL – Oils for car engines produced after 2000. For multi‑valve, turbocharged engines running on lean mixtures, with increased energy‑saving and environmental requirements. Oils that meet API SL, SM specifications can be used in cases where category SJ and earlier categories are recommended. CI-4 – Category introduced in 2002. Oil meeting this level has higher dispersancy (greater amount of detergent‑dispersant additives), increased resistance to thermal oxidation compared with CH-4 class, provides reduced oil consumption for carbon deposits by decreasing volatility and reducing evaporation losses under gas exposure at operating temperature 370 °C. Improved cold pumpability, increased engine seal life due to better oil compatibility with seals. The class was introduced taking into account stricter environmental engine requirements and has been released since 1 October 2002.

Classification by ACEA standard

The European Automobile Manufacturers Association also has specific requirements, which forces motorists to deal with yet another classification. Europeans have divided lubricants into four categories: A, B, C and E. They also designate an energy‑saving class. ACEA E7 – provides excellent piston cleanliness, high‑quality lubrication, reduced wear, and helps lower deposit formation. Designed for high‑power diesel engines, it complies with Euro I, II, III, IV, V emission standards. It can be used under very severe conditions, for example with greatly extended oil‑change intervals (as recommended by the manufacturer). Suitable for use in EGR models without a soot filter, as well as for some engines with SCR NOx systems.
