ILSAC GF-5

ILSAC GF‑5 is an American standard developed jointly by AA and API that sets requirements for motor oils for gasoline and light‑diesel engines, including turbocharged units. Technically it calls for reduced SAPS (sulfated, aromatic and phosphorus compounds) content, which ensures compatibility with after‑treatment systems (DPF) and catalysts, as well as increased resistance to oxidation, wear and viscosity loss over a wide temperature range. The specification is aimed at engines that require fuel economy without sacrificing protection, notably modern 4‑cylinder turbo engines and light diesels with low emission levels. Oils meeting GF‑5 are often used in Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet and other models where manufacturers specify a minimum GF‑5 in technical documentation. When selecting, newer specifications such as ILSAC GF‑6, GF‑6A can be considered, which remain compatible with the older GF‑5 requirements while offering even better protective capability and economy.
