Also, due to the nature of oil, it tends to operate only within a certain temperature range, which limits its potential. This characteristic prompts manufacturers to add additives to such oils so they can be used in more extreme conditions (temperatures).
Another common consideration is that mineral oils, because of their faster wear, need to be replaced more often.

Although these oils degrade faster due to oxidation, the specifications and standards for both mineral and synthetic oils are the same. Therefore, for a mineral oil to meet a given specification, it simply needs to endure the same conditions as a synthetic oil with that specification.

Synthetic oils perform better in resisting thermal breakdown and evaporation, and they are also thinner at low temperatures. That’s why low‑temperature oils such as 0W20 or 5W30 are usually synthetic.

Typically, winter‑grade oils such as 10W50 and 15W40 are either hybrid or even mineral, because with the right additives they do not fall short of fully synthetic oils.
