Recently we described, what motor oils are and what their purpose is, we hope it was interesting. Now, we want to discuss in more detail the important characteristics of oils and what to pay attention to. And we will start, as you probably guessed, with one of the most important oil characteristics, namely – the viscosity index.
What is the viscosity index?
Viscosity is a material property that characterizes a liquid's resistance to flow. The higher the viscosity, the slower the liquid spreads and the denser the compound is considered.
Viscosity characteristics can change and depend on the environment, especially temperature, in order to provide protection and proper operation.
Thus, we can note that the viscosity index is needed to determine the motor oil's ability to resist thinning under high road temperatures.
To be able to modify the viscosity index in mineral oils, additives are added, usually plastic polymers that have the required properties.
In contrast, synthetic oils can withstand such changes without additives, and this is their main advantage over mineral oils.
The SAE – Society of Automotive Engineers introduced a coding system to characterize viscosity at cold and high temperatures.
The higher the viscosity, the slower the liquid spreads and the denser the compound is considered.
The number before the letter “W” in the oil name indicates the index at low temperatures (W – Winter), and the second number characterizes the oil at operating (high) temperatures.
For example, this means that a 5W30 motor oil has significantly lower viscosity at low and high temperatures than 10W40.
You need to keep temperature changes in mind so that your engine works as well as possible. Here you can see recommendations for each temperature:

However, be careful:
Transmission oils have different numbers and temperatures. For example, a 75W90 transmission oil does not have higher viscosity than a 15W40 (motor oil).

Oil characteristics
In addition to the viscosity index, there are other factors to consider when choosing oil for your car.
ACEA approvals
The Association of European Automobile Manufacturers ACEA (Association des Constructeurs Européens d’Automobiles) has its own standards for oils. They conduct series of tests and experiments that evolve and are updated in line with all new regulations and technologies.
ACEA approvals apply to engines of passenger and commercial vehicles, which are divided into the following categories:
- A/B: Бензинові та Дизельні двигуни. Зазвичай їх поєднують в допусках. Наприклад – A3/B3 та A3/B4.
- C: Catalytic converters compatible with oils, which also extend DPF life.
- E: Diesel engines of trucks, vans and other commercial vehicles.

API specifications (American Petroleum Institute)
З іншої сторони у нас є також допуски від API (American Petroleum Institute). Вони використовують систему із двома буквами для характеристики оливи.
Варіації для першої літери використовують для характеристики типу двигуна:
- S for petrol engines
- C for diesel engines
- F for modern diesel engines (post‑2017): This new specification is aimed at reducing fuel consumption.
Друга літера акцентує увагу на якості. Найнижчу якість показують літерою А, і чим дальше – тим вища якість оливи.
Наприклад, нумерація API SN вказує на оливу, яка є кращої якості ніж API SJ.
Так само, як і з допусками ACEA, характеристики можуть поєднуватись, якщо олива підходить для обох типів двигунів. Наприклад, олива моторна може бути SM/CF.

Automaker specifications (OEM – Original Equipment Manufacturer)
Також, трапляється, що виробники створюють список власних вимог до своїх двигунів. Ці оливи часто співпадають із допусками SAE, проте можуть відразнятись.
Як наслідок, олива перед продажем повинна пройти ряд тестів виробника автомобілів, такі як Volkswagen VW 507 та the BMW Longlife 01, для того щоб ми могли рекомендувати її для двигунів цих автомобілів.
