The designation 5W‑30 in the SAE J300 system indicates a cold viscosity of 5 W (the oil’s ability to flow at –30 °C) and a viscosity of 30 at 100 °C, providing quick engine start in cold weather and stable protection at operating temperatures. This grade is suitable for most modern gasoline and diesel passenger‑car engines, including turbocharged units, as well as for light trucks equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems and particulate filters (DPF). 5W‑30 oils are often formulated with low SAPS content, allowing catalysts to remain effective and extending DPF service life.
