The designation 20W‑50 according to the SAE J300 standard means that the oil has a cold viscosity of 20 (W) and a density of 50 cSt at 100 °C. This high viscosity provides durable cylinder protection under high thermal load and at high ambient temperatures, so it is recommended for older gasoline and diesel engines of trucks, off‑road vehicles and motorcycles that operate in hot climates or under heavy load. Since 20W‑50 does not contain low‑sulphate additives, it is not suitable for engines with modern after‑treatment systems (DPF, SCR, catalysts) and does not meet SAPS requirements. For newer models that need similar protection, 15W‑50 or 10W‑50 are often used, which remain compatible with a broader range of after‑treatment systems.
