FORD MERCON

Ford MERCON approval is an official transmission oil specification developed by Ford Motor Company for automatic gearboxes. It sets requirements for viscosity (typically 5W‑30 or 10W‑30), oxidation stability, wear protection and precise friction characteristics that ensure smooth gear shifts and long‑lasting operation under high loads. MERCON is intended for passenger and commercial vehicles with automatic transmissions such as C4, C5, 4R70W, 5R110, as well as heavy‑duty truck/tractor gearboxes that require compatibility with Ford oils. The specification does not include requirements for SAPS, DPF or catalytic systems, as it concerns only the transmission system. When selecting a lubricant that meets MERCON, service technicians can be confident in maintaining warranty conditions and minimizing the risk of premature wear. The newer approvals MERCON LV, MERCON V and MERCON XL‑12 remain backward compatible with equipment designed for the original MERCON, allowing a smooth transition to improved formulas without changing the transmission.
