Caterpillar ECF‑1a certification defines the requirements for engine oils intended for heavy-duty Caterpillar diesel engines with high power, operating under heavy load in trucks, excavators, truck cranes and generator sets. Oil that meets ECF‑1a must provide a stable protective film at high temperatures, reduce wear and oxidation, and also support the efficiency of after‑treatment systems (DPF) and catalysts thanks to low SAPS content. The specification is targeted at engines operating in the viscosity range 10W‑40, 15W‑40 and 20W‑50, and meets the emission level requirements E4‑E6.
