API SM

API SM is an American standard introduced in 2004 for gasoline engines of passenger cars that operate over a wide temperature range and are not equipped with after‑treatment systems (DPF, SCR). The specification requires a minimum viscosity index at 100 °C (VI ≥ 9), oxidation stability, wear and corrosion protection, as well as compatibility with conventional filters and catalysts that do not require low sulfur, aromatic and alkaline compound (SAPS) content. Oils meeting API SM are suitable for engines up to 2.5 L, including older models from Toyota, Honda, Ford and others that specify this code in their technical documentation. Although newer standards (e.g., API SN, API SN‑Plus) provide better fuel economy and increased protection, API SM products remain compatible with all engines designed for this category and can be used as a replacement without risk of damage.
