API SL

API SL is a specification of the American Petroleum Institute, intended for gasoline engines produced roughly in 1992‑1998, and provides a basic level of protection against wear, oxidation and deposit formation. The specification requires a minimum viscosity at 100 °C, oxidation stability, the ability to keep valves and piston rings clean, as well as control over carbon deposit formation in the combustion chamber. API SL is suitable for passenger cars with conventional gasoline engines without after‑burner systems, as well as for motorcycles and older passenger‑car power units that do not require soot filtration (DPF) or special compatibility with SAPS. Oils that meet API SL are often used in service centers for maintaining high‑mileage vehicles, where fuel economy and stable operation at various temperatures are important.
