SL is a motor oil category under the API system, intended for gasoline engines. It meets the wear, oxidation and deposit protection requirements established in 2001 and is recommended for vehicles produced up to 2004 and newer that do not require higher classes (e.g., SM, SN). When selecting oil, be sure that your vehicle manufacturer specifies compatibility with API SL, especially for older gasoline engines where this class provides an optimal balance between protection and economy.
