This is a piston type engine gasoline, but only air (and not the fuel-air mixture) enters cylinder during the first stroke of the piston. The piston rises and compresses the air to a very high temperature. At this moment, the pump injects fuel, and due to the high temperature of the air, it ignites. While the fuel is burning, the piston goes down (working stroke).

Four stroke cycle operation of a diesel internal combustion engine consists of the following processes: 1. Admission. 2. Compression. 3. Combustion (working process). 4. Output. In theoretical cycles, it is assumed that the intake of the fuel mixture occurs instantaneously, which corresponds to the starting point of compression.

Two-stroke cycle operation of a diesel internal combustion engine consists of the following processes: 1. When the piston moves up — compression fuel-air mixture in the current cycle and suction mixture for the next cycle into the cavity under the piston. 2. When the piston moves down — workflow, output and displacement fuel-air mixture from under the piston into the working cavity of the cylinder.

Cycles carburetor and diesel engines differ in the nature of the heat supply (combustion) process. It should be noted that in practice the cycle of real internal combustion engines corresponds to a combined or generalized cycle, in which the first part of heat is supplied at V=const., and the second at P=const.

There have also been many incidents of diesel engine explosions, affecting production and demand.

Diesel engines have a longer service life before overhaul — 200,000 to 800,000 km.
